Rosebery Estate

Rosebery Estate takes in an ecologically diverse area of Midlothian. Arable land & woodlands complement hill sheep farms & grouse moorland in a working landscape of extraordinary character & beauty.

Agriculture

Agriculture plays a hugely important role on Rosebery Estate. Intrinsic to the landscapes and communities of Midlothian for thousands of years, it continues to provide a way of life for many on the Estate today.

From the upland hill sheep farms in the Moorfoot Hills to the lowland arable farms around the village of Carrington, diverse farming practices and ecologies are nurtured on the Estate.

Rosebery Estate supports a balanced mix of tenanted and in-hand farms. Our in-hand farms, based at Stonefieldhill Farm near Carrington, produce 2350 tonnes of cereals and oilseed rape per annum.

Woodlands

A sustainable mix of commercial and amenity woodland is carefully managed on Rosebery Estate. There is currently 1580 acres (640 ha) of woodland on the estate and this is steadily expanding.

Recently, 50 acres (20 ha) of native, broadleaved woodlands have been planted at Braidwood, by Temple Village.

The Estate takes pride in sustainably managing woodland to The UK Woodland Assurance Standard (UKWAS). This takes into full account governmental UK Forestry Standards requirements and also those of the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) and the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC).

Ecology & Renewable Energy

Rosebery Estate regards itself as a steward of the wider environment and of the landscapes under its care.

The continual and sensitive management of the grouse moorland of the Moorfoots brings significant benefits to the ecologically fragile uplands.

The management and planting of woodlands to high sustainable standards provides an amenity to local communities as well as commercial and clear environmental benefits.

An extensive restoration of 150 acres (61 ha) of peatland was recently completed on Moorfoot Farm under the direction & funding of Scottish Natural Heritage and Peatland ACTION. The project has greatly benefited the fragile ecosystem, enhancing its biodiversity and water quality. More information about this project can be found here.

At Bowbeat Windfarm in the Moorfoot Hills, 24 wind turbines provide 1.3MW of green, renewable energy.

Restoration Projects

Rosebery Home Farm Steading is currently being restored and converted. Progress is good and the magnificent Clock Tower has been fully repaired and renovated.
