How to choose the perfect winter wedding venue?

Summer has long held the crown for the wedding season. Long, golden evenings, bright florals, and outdoor soirées, it’s easy to see why it’s often considered the perfect time to marry. Yet after seeing countless weddings, we’ve discovered a wee secret: a perfect wedding isn’t defined by the season, but by the venue. With the right setting, a winter wedding can be just as wonderful, perhaps even more so, than its summer counterpart.

So, what should you look for when choosing your perfect winter wedding venue? Below, we’ve rounded up some of the most sought-after features that you should consider for your perfect winter wedding venue.

1. Warm woods

Wooden interiors are often overlooked, yet they play a surprisingly important role in creating the perfect winter wedding atmosphere. Traditionally, these seasonal venues are warm, panelled libraries or grand, vaulted banqueting halls, such as those at Barnbougle Castle. However, the details matter too! Even a small, intimate venue with wood accents, like our Lending Library, can feel just as atmospheric as a grand hall.

Hardwood floors, long oak dining tables, exposed beams, crackling log fires, or stacked logs waiting to be lit all contribute to the sense of intimacy that makes guests feel right at home.

2. Space to dance

As the early nights draw in, there’s naturally less time spent lingering outside in deep conversation with a champagne flute in hand. But less chatting just means more time on the dancefloor!

If you’re planning to spend the evening dancing, you’ll need a venue with enough space to move. Look for venues with rooms dedicated to dancing or that can be easily transformed after the wedding breakfast. Just be careful, you don’t want a space that’s so big that you lose sight of your bridesmaids across a cavernous hall. The ideal space should comfortably accommodate your guests, allow room for your first dance, a ceilidh, and possibly even a conga line or two. Rosebery Steading offers two converted barns with plenty of room for a proper knees-up. The Threshing Barn even has its own bar, so guests never have far to go. Barnbougle Castle’s grand banqueting hall provides abundant space, yet despite the vaulted ceilings, it still feels wonderfully intimate

3. Huddling around a fire

Few things say “winter wedding” quite like the glow of a fire. Whether it’s a hearth indoors or a fire pit outdoors, it adds an instant warmth to a venue. Guests can huddle for a quiet tête-à-tête, enjoy a nightcap, or even toast a marshmallow, creating small but memorable moments that remain long after the day has ended.

Search for venues that offer this kind of cosy focal point, such as the courtyard at Rosebery Steading. Even if most of the night is spent indoors, the chance to step outside to a crackling fire is something your guests will truly appreciate – blankets can, of course, be provided.

4. Candlelight

Winter weddings are made for soft, glowing light. Candlelit tables, lanterns along corridors, or tealights in alcoves instantly create a romantic atmosphere. Beyond aesthetics, candles flatter photographs, offering a warmth and softness that electric lighting just can’t replicate.

At Rosebery House and across our venues, candles are allowed on dining tables, while LED alternatives are used elsewhere for safety, without compromising on the ambience.

5. Food that feels like a feast

Winter calls for food that’s generous, comforting, and seasonal. Think sharing platters piled high with roasted meats, root vegetables, and hearty puddings. Many couples opt for indulgent, celebratory menus like roast dinners with all the trimmings, mulled wine on arrival, or even a hot chocolate station to round off the evening.

Rosebery House and Rosebery Steading work with a selection of trusted catering partners who offer a wide range of options, from classic three-course menus and opulent buffets to fun food stations. Packages also include staffing, tableware, and linens, with upgrades available for those extra-special touches.

Our panel features four of Scotland’s finest wedding caterers, Wild Thyme, Stocks Events, The Edinburgh Catering Company, and Platter & Pop, though you’re also welcome to bring in external catering for pre-wedding celebrations

7. Not far to travel to bed

After a night of dancing and feasting, the last thing anyone wants is a long, cold journey home. Accommodation is therefore a key part of choosing a winter wedding venue. Cosy bedrooms, roll-top baths, and spaces to relax the morning after can turn a wedding day into a full weekend experience.

Rosebery Steading, for example, sleeps 28 guests in comfortable, intimate rooms, complete with indulgent baths, the perfect way to round off a magical celebration. Guests wake up surrounded by loved ones, reliving the magic of the night before without the stress of travel.

Winter weddings really do have a magic of their own, and the right venue brings it together, turning a chilly day into a celebration you and your guests will never forget.
