Sustainability

Our initiatives

Rosebery Estate’s sustainability initiatives not only preserve its land and natural beauty but also set a benchmark for environmentally responsible estate management. These initiatives demonstrate a strong commitment to protecting Scotland’s natural resources while offering eco-conscious experiences for visitors and the wider community.

Rosebery Estates brings together people, farming, and forestry to create a sustainable legacy, making a meaningful difference for future generations in an ever-changing world.

Energy efficiency and renewable initiatives

Wind Energy Production: Rosebery Estates produces renewable energy to power various operations and offset carbon emissions. As one of the earliest wind farms in the South of Scotland, the estate hosts a 32-megawatt wind farm. We are currently working with renewable energy partners to expand this operation and enhance our sustainability efforts.

Energy-Efficient Buildings: Both historical buildings and modern facilities are equipped with energy-efficient lighting and heating solutions to minimise energy consumption.

Electric Vehicle Infrastructure: On-site charging stations are available, encouraging staff to adopt sustainable transportation options.

Solar Power: Our commercial farm buildings and grain dryers are powered by solar energy, supporting our commitment to renewable resources.

Sustainable Peatland & Water Management

Natural Water Features: By preserving natural water sources such as ponds and streams, the estate fosters healthy ecosystems and maintains biodiversity. In addition to conserving existing ponds, we have created 30 new ponds, providing vital habitats for a wide variety of species.

Peatland Restoration: Rosebery Estates is committed to peatland restoration as a key environmental initiative. Our recent focus has been on locations where deep peat has accumulated over centuries. Classified as a Site of Special Scientific Interest, the moorland has undergone significant restoration work aimed at reducing CO2 emissions from the peat. The area has recently completed the validation process for carbon sequestration by the Soil Association and is forecast to prevent the release of 29,000 tonnes of carbon over the next 100 years. While the peatland may only accumulate one millimetre of new peat each year, this long-term effort plays a vital role in mitigating climate change and limiting adverse global impacts.

Sustainable event management

Locally Sourced Ingredients: Rosebery Estate’s walled garden, orchards, and livestock contribute to the event menus across our portfolio of event spaces.

Heritage Ingredients: Our catering teams incorporate wild herbs, mushrooms, berries, and other foraged items unique to the Scottish landscape, connecting each menu with local heritage and traditional recipes. A standout feature is our own Great British Vermouth, handcrafted in small batches on Dalmeny Estate. This signature drink is made using sustainably grown British wine and spirit, along with herbs and botanicals carefully cultivated and foraged from the estate itself. Our Vermouth is the signature pour at Rosebery’s portfolio of event venues, offering a true taste of the land.

Sustainability and Reduced Carbon Footprint: By minimising transportation, our “Estate to Plate” model reduces reliance on imported goods, aligning with our commitment to sustainability.

Waste Reduction: For events, we promote minimal waste practices, such as eliminating single-use plastics and encouraging reusable or biodegradable materials.

Sustainable Catering Options: Our catering teams prioritise locally sourced, seasonal ingredients, reducing food miles and supporting Scottish agriculture.

Commitment to carbon reduction and net-zero goals

Carbon Sequestration Initiatives: Through forestry and soil management practices, the estate actively works to sequester carbon and reduce greenhouse gases.

Net-Zero Commitment: Rosebery Estate has committed to reducing its carbon footprint with the goal of achieving net-zero emissions, aligning with Scotland’s climate goals.
